Workshop – Chemical sensors for detecting explosive nitrogen compounds

               Energy and Renewable Energies Technology Center held workshop entitled “Chemical sensors for detecting explosive nitrogen compounds” on Monday, 10/3/2025 at 9:30 am, which was attended by the center’s staff. The workshop presented by Dr. Wahab Khadir Ahmed, and the workshop included the following points:

How to design chemical sensors based on polymers and low-molecular-mass compounds.

1. Visual detection of explosives using color and optical methods that mimic the functions of the taste and smell organs in mammals such as dogs and insects such as bees.
2. Demonstration of some types of electronic noses based on chemical sensing elements for explosives detection.
3. Comparison of electronic noses with police dogs in terms of efficiency and reliability as an effective alternative, approaching the detection limit of dogs but without the inherent drawbacks of the service dog.
4. Highlighting the effectiveness of these methods, as they are inexpensive, do not require special equipment, and are easy to interpret based on principle “yes or no”.

Workshop objective:

         To explain the mechanisms for chemical detection of explosives using modern sensors, and to highlight technical solutions that represent an effective alternative to traditional methods, enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of security detection operations.

The workshop ended by answering questions and inquiries.
